FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I BUY DIRECT FROM HEYGATES?
We supply farm feeds in loose bulk (minimum 4 tonnes) direct to commercial farms.  Our smallholder feeds in 20kg bags are supplied through a network of local distributors across the country.  Please use our Stockist Locator to find your nearest supplier.

MY HORSE IS PRONE TO LAMINITIS, WHICH OF YOUR FEEDS WOULD BE SUITABLE?
Horse and Pony Nuts - high fibre, low sugar and starch.  Feeding little and often will also help prevent laminitis along with an ad lib supply of good quality forage such as hay or haylage.

I NEED TO WORM MY CHICKENS, CAN I GET AN IN FEED WORMER FROM YOU AND HOW LONG DO I NEED TO TREAT THEM FOR?
Yes, we manufacture a layers pellet with the addition of Flubenvet. If you would like supply direct from us currently we would require a Veterinary prescription. Alternatively, if you buy your feed from or are near a merchant that is registered with the VMD then you can buy the feed from them without prescription.

Treatment is for 7 consecutive days and birds must not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment.

WHAT IS THE SIZE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PELLETS, NUTS AND ROLLS?
Pellets are 3mm, nuts are 6mm and rolls are 15mm

I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE FROM MY CURRENT FEED TO HEYGATES FEED, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS WITHOUT CAUSING DIGESTIVE UPSET TO MY ANIMALS?
The key here is introducing the new food gradually, you can mix the a little of the new feed with the old feed and gradually reduce the amount of the old feed and increase the amount of the new feed.

MY HORSE TENDS TO LOSE CONDITION OVER THE WINTER MONTHS, WHAT PRODUCT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO HELP PREVENT THIS?
Heygates Conditioning Mix or Cubes are specifically designed to maintain body condition on those horses prone to losing weight. If you have an older horse our Twilight Mix may be more suitable, the protein level in this product is slightly higher than the conditioning feeds in order to prevent muscle wasting.

CAN I FEED MIXED CORN TO MY POULTRY ALONGSIDE THEIR COMPOUND FEED?
Yes you can, but it is recommended that you only feed in small amounts ideally in the afternoon. This is because the compound feed has been rationed to provide a fully balanced diet and therefore adding mixed corn to the diet could unbalance it.

WHAT IS A COCCIDIOSTAT AND WHY IS IT INCLUDED IN MY FEED?
A coccidiostat is an antiprotozoal agent that acts upon Coccidia parasites. It is added to the feed in order to prevent disease caused by these parasites. Feed containing a coccidiostat must be withdrawn 5 days before slaughter and a non-medicated diet fed instead. Feed with a coccidiostat must not be fed to laying birds.

CAN I FEED EWE FEED TO MY RAMS?
It is not recommended due to the fact that some of the ewe feeds contain magnesium which can cause urinary calculi. Urinary calculi is a common metabolic disease in male sheep and goats. The disease is caused when calculi (stones), usually comprised of phosphate salts, become lodged in the urinary tract and prevent urination.

DO YOUR LAYERS CONTAIN YOLK COLOURANTS? IF SO, WHICH ONES?
Yes Heygates do use colourants in our layers feeds, they are as follows;

Citranaxanthin E161i** – a manufactured product that occurs naturally in orange skins
Lutein E161b* – a completely natural product found in marigold petals
Zeaxanthin E161h* – a completely natural product also found in marigold petals.

All these colourants are fully approved by the BEICS and major retailers and are approved for use in the EU.
